William (Bill) Piercey of St. John’s was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1975 in the builder category, acknowledging his many years of service on the executive of the Newfoundland Curling Association.

But he also was an accomplished player, playing in five Briers, and winning the Ross Harstone Trophy in 1969 at Oshawa as the player who best exemplifies the ideals of good sportsmanship, observance of the rules, exemplary conduct and curling ability.

He also skipped Newfoundland/Labrador in three straight Canadian Senior Men’s Championships (1981, 1982 and 1983), in addition to participating in the first televised curling game in Newfoundland in 1971, the final of a cashspiel at the Bally Haly Curling Club (with noted hockey analyst Howie Meeker on the broadcast crew).

In addition to Bill’s achievements on the ice he played an important role in promoting and organizing the sport of curling. He served on the executive of the Newfoundland Curling Association for seven years and as President for the years 1971, 1972 and 1973. He was General Chairman for the National Seniors Championships held in St. John’s in 1984. Bill has also served on a number of national committees of the CCA including the Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

It can be said of Bill Piercey that he has given freely of his time for many years for the betterment of curling in our province.

Piercey passed away on Dec. 19, 2000, in St. John’s at the age of 73.
