Biography / Biographie:

Laurie Artiss began his career as a sports writer for the Winnipeg Tribune before moving to the Brandon Sun, for which, in 1962, he covered his first Brier. In 1965 he moved to Regina, where he covered curling, football and baseball for the Leader-Post. He left the Post in 1969 to establish Laurie Artiss Ltd., a curling supply company that added curling pins to tis list of merchandise in 1976 and eventually became the official supplier of the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games and the Canadian Olympic Committee. Artiss added even more to curling in his capacity as volunteer, acting as chairman of the 1976 Brier and the 1973 and ’83 Silver Brooms. In 1995, the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association added Artiss to the Manitoba Media Roll of Honour. In 2004, he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
