The curling achievements of Robert Heartwell are many but his major contribution has been in the ice technician area. He served as chairman of the Ice Technician committee and has been a committee for eight years. In the executive area, he served term as president of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club, president of the Ontario Curling Association, chairman of the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) seniors committee, and chairman of the Hall of Fame selection committee.
Bob was the owner of the Sarnia Ice Company Limited from 1964 to 1980 and sold the business in favour of an early retirement. Throughout his career he was active in the Great Lakes Ice Association and the Canadian Association of Ice Industries, and became a member of their Hall of Fame in 1980.
He was also a long standing member of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club, and was elected president in 1973. Bob was an active member of the Sarnia Yacht Club and became Commodore in 1990/91. Bob received many awards for his participation in the sailing and curling worlds, and was awarded lifetime membership in the Ontario and Canadian curling Associations.
Drawing from his experience from the ice industries, he wrote the Ice Technician Reference Manual for Curling for the Ontario Curling Association, which subsequently became the world wide reference standard.
He was chairman of the 1985 Soling World Sailing Championships held in Sarnia in 1985 and was appointed as a Canadian delegate to the World Curling Association in 1989 helping bring the sport of curling to the Olympics.
He was appointed as a Member of the Governor General’s Curling Club in 1988, awarded the Herb Millham Award of Merit for Outstanding Contributions to Curling in 1989, and elected to the Canadian Curling Association Hall of Fame (Builder Category) in 1990, the same year he was elected to the Sarnia/Lambton Sports Hall of Fame.
After 16 years of very active voluntary efforts, he retired from the curling and sailing worlds in 1995.
