BOTH MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TEAMS IN PLAYOFF CONTENTION AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

Both of Canada’s teams at the FISU World University Games remain firmly in the playoff hunt following Saturday’s action in Torino, Italy.

The Canadian women from the University of Alberta, skipped by Serena Gray-Withers, won their only game of the day, beating Italy 8-3.

“We had a strong performance today,” said Gray-Withers. “We had a good read on the ice and used our sweepers on every shot.”

Canada’s force efficiency statistics were perfect, as the Italians never scored more than a single point. Canada, meanwhile, put multiple points on the board in the first, third, and fifth end. A steal in the sixth basically put the game out of reach.

“We kept our strategy simple,” said Gray-Withers. “We tried to call shots with a good make-probability, and kept the pressure on the Italian team the whole time.”

Team Canada – Gray-Withers, Catherine Clifford, Briana Cullen, and Zoe Cinnamon) now sits alone at the top of the table with a perfect 5-0 record. They’ll face Sweden and Japan on Sunday.

“We just need to keep the momentum going,” said Gray-Withers.

The Canadian men’s team, from the University of Regina, split their Saturday games, beating South Korea but losing to the United States.

Canada, skipped by Josh Bryden (with Adam Bukurak, Carter Williamson, and Ayden Wittmire), have a 4-2 record, which places them tied for third, safely in a playoff spot with three games left to play.

Canada will play Norway and Ukraine on Sunday.

Following the round robin, the top four teams from each gender will play a semifinal on Tuesday.

The fourth end was indeed a turning point. Making good use of a corner guard, Canada hid three stones, before chipping out Sweden’s last freeze attempt for a score of four.

Both teams are streaming games on their Facebook pages. Playoff games will be streamed on FISU.tv. For results and schedules, visit: https://wugtorino2025.microplustimingservices.com/#/general-reports
