Earning a berth!
Team Peterman/Gallant Victory at Mixed Doubles Qualifier vaults Team Armstrong/Griffith to Mixed Doubles Trials berth
A busy 4-person curling schedule for both Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant didn’t stop their mixed doubles game from being tack-sharp this past week, as the mixed doubles tandem took home the Banff/Canmore Mixed Doubles Trials Qualifier event top prize with a 6-2 win over Team Lott/Lott (Winnipeg Beach, Man.) in the final on Sunday.
The win would normally grant the event victors a berth into the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials, set for Dec. 30, 2024 to Jan. 4, 2025 at Liverpool, N.S., but Team Peterman/Gallant (Chestermere, Alta.) had already locked up its mixed doubles trials spot as bronze medallists at the 2024 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.
Instead, the berth goes to the qualifying event’s highest finishing team who had not earned a trials spot and, with a semifinal finish, Team Jennifer Armstrong/Tyrel Griffith (Rothesay, N.B./Kelowna, B.C.), punch its ticket through to the mixed doubles trials in just a few short weeks.
The Armstrong/Griffith duo currently sit 19th overall in Canadian mixed doubles rankings and have heated up as of late, including another semifinal finish at the Mixed Doubles Trials Qualifying event at Maple Ridge, B.C., last month. The team also posted a respectable 3-4 record at the 2024 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship this past March, missing the playoffs as part of a pool D logjam.
Cash and Canadian Mixed Doubles Ranking Tier 1 points were also accrued at the 32-team qualifying event; the winners earning $6,500, while the runners-up took home $4,500. Semifinalists cashed $3,000 for their efforts, quarterfinalists earned $2,000 and round-of-12 finishers netted $1,250, respectively.
Team Brittany Tran/Rylan Kleiter (Calgary/Saskatoon) claimed the first available qualifying event berth after a winning performance at Maple Ridge, B.C., while Team Rachel Homan/Brendan Bottcher (Beaumont, Alta./Spruce Grove, Alta.) took home the second available qualifier spot with a victory at Guelph, Ont.
The 16-team field for the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials will be confirmed Tuesday.
