Banff and Canmore, Alta., to host Mixed Doubles Trials Event Qualifier event beginning Thursday

A robust 32-team mixed doubles field will head to Alberta this week as both the Banff Curling Club and the Canmore Golf & Curling Club will host a third and final 2025 Mixed Doubles Trials Qualifier Event beginning Thursday morning.

And with only one qualifying spot available for the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials at the qualifier event, the stakes will be higher than Rocky Mountain peaks as Olympic dreams hang in the balance.

The event will be a triple knockout format with 12 qualifiers earning a berth into a championship round. The remaining games from there will be a single-knockout bracket until a winner is crowned.

Mixed Doubles juggernaut and 2024 Canadian Mixed Doubles silver medallist Team Laura Walker/Kirk Muyers (Calgary/Regina) will be in the field, alongside other heavy hitters like reigning Canadian Mixed Doubles Champion Team Kadriana Lott/Colton Lott (Winnipeg Beach, Man.) and current Canadian No. 2 ranked Team Nancy Martin/Steve Laycock (Martensville, Sask./Saskatoon).

Canadian Mixed Doubles Ranking Tier 1 points will also be accrued while the 32-team field vies for a $30,00 purse at the qualifying event; the winners earning $6,500, while the runners-up take home $4,500. Semifinalists will cash $3,000 for their efforts, quarterfinalists earn $2,000 and round-of-12 finishers net $1,250, respectively.

Opening draw action will begin Thursday morning at 9 a.m., (all times Mountain) with the final set to go Sunday at 3 p.m.

Team Brittany Tran/Rylan Kleiter (Calgary/Saskatoon) claimed the first available qualifying event berth after a winning performance at Maple Ridge, B.C., while Team Rachel Homan/Brendan Bottcher (Beaumont, Alta./Edmonton) took home the second available qualifier spot with a victory at Guelph, Ont.
