Career Opportunity: Ice Shed Manager/Chief Ice Technician

Employment Type: 8-Month Contract (August 15th – April 15th Annually)
Team: Lead a team of 3-5 ice technicians, reporting to our General Manager.

The Chilliwack Curling Club & Community Centre is looking for a skilled and motivated Ice Shed
Manager and Chief Ice Technician to lead and mentor a team of 3-5 assistant ice technicians.
This is a full time, multi-year, 8-month employment opportunity for the remainder of the 2024-
25 season, with pro-rated compensation based on the remaining time in the 2024-25 season.
In this leadership role, you will oversee all aspects of our ice shed operations, ensuring the
highest-quality ice conditions for our members and guests. You will manage ice installation,
routine maintenance, and scheduling while guiding your team through tasks such as scraping,
nipping, and pebbling. Working closely with our management team, you will develop and
maintain a detailed timeline for activities like flooding, stone texturing, scraping, etc., ensuring
they are completed safely and efficiently within an appropriate time frame.
As the lead technician, you will also be a key resource for our members, engaging with them
constructively. We are looking for someone who continuously refines their techniques in line
with industry best practices and a culture of mentorship. This is an outstanding opportunity for

Position Overview:
The Ice Shed Manager will play a key leadership role in supervising a team of ice technicians and
managing all aspects of ice maintenance at the facility. This includes overseeing the
refrigeration plant, coordinating and scheduling routine ice maintenance, and ensuring a safe
and efficient working environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic
planning and execution of ice operations, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.
This is a long-term opportunity with the potential for full-time, year-round employment beyond
the initial contract term for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities:
• Team Leadership & Development: Lead, train, and supervise a team of 3-5 ice
technicians, fostering a culture of excellence, safety, and collaboration to ensure
optimal ice-making and maintenance practices.
• Ice Preparation & Maintenance: Oversee all aspects of ice installation, routine
maintenance, and major ice maintenance tasks (e.g., texturing, flooding), ensuring highquality ice conditions for members and guests.
• Refrigeration Plant Oversight: Manage the operation, maintenance, and strategic
replacement of the refrigeration plant, working closely with the refrigeration contractor
to ensure smooth operations throughout the season.
• Safety & Staff Training: Maintain a strong focus on safety, ensuring that all ice
technicians are well-trained and adhere to industry best practices, safety protocols, and
ice technician manuals.
• Curling Stones Care: Ensure all curling stones are maintained, ensuring they are in
excellent condition and ready for use after each ice maintenance.
• Facility Management & Upkeep: Oversee general upkeep within the ice shed, including
monitoring the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems to ensure the facility operates
efficiently and safely in alignment with our Capital Replacement Planning.
• End-of-Season Shutdown/ Start Up: Lead the end-of-season shutdown and Start-up
process, working with the refrigeration contractor to decommission the ice plant and
prepare the facility for the offseason, ensuring a smooth transition for each season.
Qualifications:
• Completed the Ammonia Safety Awareness Program
• Completed Ice Facility Operator (IFO) Course and Certification through RFABC or
equivalent.
• Completed Refrigeration Operator (RO) Course and Certification/ Exam through
Technical Safety BC or equivalent
• Completed Assistant Ice Tech Course or Equivalent
• Completed Curling Ice Technician Course and Certification or Equivalent
• Completed Competition Ice Technician Course and Exam or Equivalent
• 3 years experience working as a Certified Chief Ice Technician at a Curling Club
• Experience making championship ice conditions at the local, provincial and national
levels or equivalent.
