Eight teams remain in fight to represent Canada at World University Games

Twenty teams entered. Eight remain.

The playoff picture at the FISU Mixed Doubles Qualifier became clear Sunday night, eliminating twelve teams from contention to represent Canada at the upcoming World University Games.

The top two teams from each of four pools advanced to the quarterfinals. Jessica Zheng and Victor Pieterangelo (Niagara Falls, Ont.), twice winners of the U-25 NextGen Classic Mixed Doubles event, went undefeated in Pool A to claim top spot.

In Pool B, Jamie Smith and Wyatt Small – both students at Wilfred Laurier University – were also perfect in pool play and will move on to the quarterfinals.

Emma Artichuk, also a student at Laurier, won pool C with partner Owen Purcell (Dalhousie University). They had a 3-1 record.

The Alberta-based duo of Kayleigh Shannon and Rhett Whittmire also went 3-1 to win Pool D.

“We’re so excited to have officially made the playoffs,” said Artichuk. “Each game we’ve built from the last and we’re having an awesome time on and off the ice. I can’t wait to play off for an opportunity of a lifetime”

The winner will represent Canada at the World University Games in Torino, Italy. They’ll take place from January 13th to 23rd, 2025. Mixed Doubles will join four-player curling on the schedule for the first time.

Teams from the University of Alberta and the University of Regina have already qualified for the four-player event. The Mixed Doubles qualifier was open to all university or college students under the age of 25. Pairs were not required to attend the same institution.

Rounding out the playoff picture are Ontario’s Tori Zemmelink and Kibo Mulima, Nova Scotia’s Maria Fitzgerald and Caelan McPherson, Alberta’s Gracelyn Richards and Johnson Tao, and Nova Scotia’s Cate Fitzgerald and David McCurdy.

Playoffs begin Sunday night and and conclude on Monday.
