Canada to face South Korea in BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship semifinal

Rachel Homan and Team Canada will get a rematch with South Korea after Eunji Gim skipped her foursome to a 6-3 win over Team Sweden in the 4 vs. 5 playoff qualification game Saturday at the 2024 BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship.

The 3 vs. 6 qualification game saw Team Italy, skipped by Stefania Constantini, beat Madeleine Dupont and Team Denmark 7-4 in Sydney’s Centre 200.

South Korea, which has never won the women’s world championship, plays Canada, which finished first in the round robin at 11-1 in one semifinal at 5 p.m. In the other semifinal Italy, another worlds non-winner, takes on Silvana Tirinzoni and Team Switzerland, 10-2 and second in the round robin, that is chasing a fifth straight world championship title.

The semifinal winners play in the gold-medal game Sunday at 5 p.m. and the losers play for bronze Sunday at 11 a.m. (all times Atlantic).

“If we play like yesterday we will have a good result,” Gim said of the rematch with Canada.

Gim and her teammates of third Minji Kim, second Suji Kim, lead Yeeun Seol, alternate Yeji Seol and coach Guy Hemmings, handed Canada its only loss in the 13-team round robin, 6-5 in Friday evening’s final draw. Of Homan’s team’s six losses this season, two have been to South Korea, which finished the round robin with a 10-2 win-loss record, the same as Italy and Switzerland.

It was another disappointing end to Hasselborg’s world championship. Hasselborg has skipped Sweden in seven world championships without reaching the top of the podium. She won silver in 2018 and 2019.

Sweden, 7-5 and fifth in the round robin, started well against South Korea, stealing a single in the first end on the strength of two perfect draws by Hasselborg. But the Swedes could never muster more than two more singles in the game. South Korea managed only two deuces, in the second and ninth ends, but that was enough to create the final margin of victory.

Sweden had one final chance for a game-tying two in the 10th end, but Hasselborg’s attempt at a flat double takeout got only one South Korean stone.

Italy, 10-2 in the round robin, and Denmark, 6-6, traded singles and deuces through six ends of their game before Constantini and her teammates stole two in the seventh end and one in the eight for a 7-3 margin.
