Swedish hopes buoyed

Swedish Olympic champion remains alive at BKT Tires World Women’s Championship

Anna Hasselborg and Team Sweden continued to find their game Monday evening to keep alive their hopes of making the playoffs at the 2024 BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship in Sydney, N.S.

The 2018 Olympic gold-medal champion stole seven points in the first four ends to roll to an 8-1, six-end victory over Scotland’s Team Rebecca Morrison (1-4). It was Sweden’s second straight win after opening the event with three consecutive losses.

At 2-3, Sweden is one of three teams with three losses.

Sitting atop the standings, alone at 5-0, is four-time defending champion Switzerland’s Team Silvana Tirinzoni after a 10-3 victory over Japan’s Team Miyu Ueno (1-4). The Swiss stole two in the third and scored three in the sixth and eighth ends.

In the other games, Norway’s Team Marianne Roervik (2-3) stole deuces in the first and second ends and rolled to an 11-5 victory over Turkey’s Team Dilsat Yildiz (1-4); and Denmark’s Team Madeleine Dupont (4-1) scored three in the tenth end to remain solidly in the hunt for a playoff berth with a 10-9 win over Estonia’s Team Liisa Turmann (1-4).

Rachel Homan’s Team Canada had the evening bye, having beaten Norway in the afternoon to remain unbeaten at 4-0. The results set up two huge games for Canada on Tuesday. Homan’s Ottawa-based foursome will play the two other unbeaten teams – Italy (4-0) at 9 a.m. and Switzerland at 7 p.m.

The top six teams in the 13-country championship advance to the playoff round. Ties for the playoffs will be solved by head-to-head results.

The top two teams from round-robin play get byes to Saturday’s semifinals. The third-place team will play the sixth and fourth will play fifth in the qualifying-round games that morning.

The winners of the qualifying-round games advance to the semifinals. The semifinal losers will play for the bronze medal Sunday morning. The winners meet for the gold Sunday evening.

The 2024 BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship continues Tuesday with draws at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (all times Atlantic).
