Located northeast of downtown Toronto, Leaside Curling Club is a publicly owned eight-sheet curling facility. With more than 1,000 members and 20 leagues for curlers of all ages and abilities, Leaside is Ontario’s largest curling club. In addition to league play, the club hosts numerous educational clinics, bonspiels and other club events, as well as renting out ice to numerous school, corporate and other groups.
The club is a not-for-profit organization. The club leases the facility from the City of Toronto and the club’s Board of Directors is responsible for the overall operations and management of the club.
About the role:
The Senior Ice Manager is responsible for all aspects of Ice Shed Operations and maintaining high quality curling ice for the benefit of the club’s members for the curling season that runs from September to April. This role is part of the club’s leadership team and is key in supporting the General Manager.
Responsibilities: Ice shed operations
- Plan and execute ice installation and removal
- Operate, monitor and adjust the ice/shed control system when necessary
- Lead required responses to ice making plant or related alarms, fault or emergency conditions
- Supervise maintenance of ice making plant
- Ensure automated measurements of ice temperatures, air humidity, ambient air reading, ice plant readings and primary brine and sub floor brine temps are accurate and in line with manual readings
- Prepare and maintain the club’s detailed daily records of ice temperatures, humidity readings, ambient air reading, ice thickness (in particular the edges of sheets one and eight where loss of ice occurs regularly) and ice plant readings. The report should include primary brine and sub floor brine temperatures
- Advise the General Manager regarding the choice of refrigeration contractors used to maintain the ice plant
- Ensure all equipment and tools necessary to fulfill the ice maintenance tasks are available and in good working order at all times
- Report any equipment deficiencies to the General Manager, if equipment needs to be replaced, provide recommendations and source multiple cost estimates
- Complete monthly inventories of equipment and supplies
- Gain prior approval for all club-related expenses or purchases from the General Manager
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the General Manager
Responsibilities: Ice maintenance
Throughout the curling season maintain high quality and consistent ice surface for membership, that involves:
- Keeping the ice clean, free of damage, with speed running between 14-15 seconds hog to hog consistently under normal circumstances
- Providing ice with consistent curl from end to end within the area of play on each sheet
- Meeting target curl for draws which is from three to four feet, as measured at far tee line, curling toward and away from centre line
- Preventing the development of runs, ridges, falls and other detrimental ice features
- The ice is nipped before all draws and kept clean and free of debris by scraping all areas of the ice including non-playing areas
- All debris is removed from rock beds and from under the rocks by hand scraping at least once per day (conduct hot mopping as required)
- Ensure that emergency exits are free of obstructions
Responsibilities: Management
- Assist the General Manager with the hiring of Ice Technicians and Facility Assistants
- Train Ice Technicians and Facility Assistants on their assigned duties, including how to use any necessary equipment
- Supervise Ice Technicians and Facility Assistants as they carry out their assigned duties
- Prepare and maintain a monthly schedule for all Facility Assistants; communicate changes in schedule to the Facility Assistants and General Manager
- Ensure timesheets are accurate and completed in full
- Be in compliance with the club’s Code of Conduct
- Ensure that Ice Technicians and Facility Assistants are trained and compliant with any applicable legislation
Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of curling ice shed operations and ice maintenance experience
- Level 2 or 3 Ice Technician Certification
- First Aid certification
- Smart Serve certification
- Excellent communications skills. Maintain regular contact with General Manager, Ice Technicians and Facility Assistants. Able to deliver clear instructions to team members, clarify expectations, and provide timely constructive feedback
