Canada earns another split at World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles

Canada’s Wheelchair Mixed Doubles team was looking to put Sunday’s loss behind them, and to come out strong on Monday.

That’s exactly what they did in the morning session of the World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Lohja, Finland.

Facing the United States, Canada’s Marie Wright and Jamie Anseeuw started the game with last rock for the first time in the tournament, and promptly scored five in the first end following a miscue from the U.S.’s David Samsa.

The American’s took two in the second and stole one in the third. The Canadians were able to erase that progress, scoring three, thanks to some well placed stones from Anseeuw and a tough draw from Wright. 

Canada went on to steal points in the fifth and sixth end, taking a 10-3 lead into the seventh. The U.S.A. scored a single in the seventh, but conceded the game without playing the eighth end.

Unfortunately, the afternoon draw against Norway didn’t go as smoothly for Canada.

Once again, Canada started with the hammer, but Norway (Rikke Iversen and Rune Lorentsen) was able to steal a point in the first. Canada answered with one in the second, and the two teams traded deuces for the third and fourth ends.

Tied playing the fifth end, Norway were able to take three, then steal two, then steal another one to take a 9-3 lead into the 8th. The Canadians conceded, with no score being posted in the eighth.

Canada now sits in fifth place in the Pool B with a 2-3 record, and three games to play. They’ll likely need to win all three to secure a place in the top three, and advance to the playoff round.

First up  on Tuesday morning will be last-place Turkey (1-4), followed by the Czech Republic (tied for third, 3-2).
