Mixed Doubles Olympic dreams on the line in Liverpool, N.S.

One team will take a significant step closer to pursing an Olympic medal at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials, beginning Monday at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool, N.S.

Sixteen teams from across the country will participate in the Trials, which will conclude on Saturday, Jan. 4. The winning team will first represent Canada at the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Championship April 26-May 3 in Fredericton, N.B.

That event also will decide most of the countries that will compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, and if Canada qualifies for the Games, it will be the Trials winner in Liverpool who will wear the Maple Leaf in Italy.

It will be the first time the Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials have been staged since 2018, when the duo of Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris prevailed in Portage la Prairie, Man. They went on to win the inaugural Olympic Mixed Doubles Curling gold medal a few weeks later in South Korea.

The 2022 Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 16 teams will be divided into two pools of eight for a round robin from Monday through to Thursday, Jan. 2. The top three teams from each pool advance to a six-team playoff, following a format similar to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and Montana’s Brier.

Playoff action begins on Thursday, with the top two teams from each pool crossing over to compete for a direct spot in the Page 1v2 game. The losers drop down to play the third-placed teams in each pool for the spots in the Page 3v4 game.

From there, the winner of the Page 1v2 advances to the final, while the loser will play the winner of the Page 3v4 game in the semifinal. The semifinal winner moves on to the gold-medal match on Saturday, Jan. 4, where the Trials champion will be crowned.

Streaming for the Trials will be available on Curling Canada’s YouTube channel.
