PointsBet starts Wednesday!

Country’s top teams set for third PointsBet Invitational in Calgary

Sudden-death drama will be the storyline over five days of high-calibre curling when the 2024 PointsBet Invitational gets underway Wednesday at the WinSport Event Centre in Calgary.

Sixteen men’s and sixteen women’s teams are entered in the third annual PointsBet Invitational, all looking to get their 2024-25 campaigns kicked off in style, not to mention grab a big chunk of a prize purse in excess of $350,000.

Sweep 16 action is set for Wednesday and Thursday, with women’s draws at 1 p.m. (all times Mountain) and men’s draws at 6 p.m. both days.

That will get things whittled down to the Elite 8, which is set for Friday (women at 1 p.m., men at 8 p.m.), with the Final 4 semifinals Saturday (women at 1 p.m., men at 8 p.m.) and championship finals Sunday (women at 10 a.m., men at 3 p.m.).

On the women’s side, reigning PointsBet Invitational, Scotties Tournament of Hearts and World Women’s champions Team Rachel Homan will be in action Wednesday afternoon. The top seeds, returning to the same building where they won the 2024 Scotties in February, take on No. 16-seeded Team Gabby Wood (reigning Canadian Colleges Athletic Association champions) of Edmonton.

On the men’s side, two-time defending PointsBet Invitational champ Team Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg, seeded No. 6, opens its quest for a three-peat Thursday night against No. 11 Team Félix Asselin of Montreal, while top-seeded Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., is on the ice Wednesday night against No. 16 Team Dan Sherrard (reigning Everest Canadian Club Champions) of Beaumont, Alta.

Here’s how teams qualified: 

  • The top 10 highest-ranked women’s and men’s teams on the final 2023-24 Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) standings.
  • The 2024 Alberta women’s (Team Selena Sturmay, Edmonton) and men’s (Team Aaron Sluchinski, Airdrie) champions.
  • The women’s (Team Allyson MacNutt, Halifax) and men’s (Team Kenan Wipf, Calgary) champions of the 2024 New Holland Canadian Under-21 Championships.
  • The women’s (Team Gabby Wood, Edmonton) and men’s (Team Jacob Dobson, Toronto) champions of the 2024 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships.
  • The women’s (Team Serena Gray-Withers, Edmonton) and men’s (Team Josh Bryden, Regina) champions of the 2024 U SPORTS/Curling Canada Canadian University Championships.
  • The women’s (Team Taylor Reese-Hansen, Victoria) and men’s (Team Jordon McDonald, Winnipeg) champions of the Curling Canada Under-25 NextGen Classic earlier this month in Edmonton.
  • The women’s (Team Abby Burgess of Oromocto, N.B.) and men’s champions (Team Dan Sherrard of Beaumont, Alta.) at the 2023 Everest Canadian Curling Club Championships.

To claim those berths, teams needed to have three of the four players still in the lineup with whom they qualified.

If any of the six championship-event qualifying teams were already in the top 10 of the 2023-24 CTRS (as was the case with both Alberta champions), those berths were awarded to the next highest non-qualified team on the CTRS.

Seedings to set the brackets were based on the 2023-24 CTRS standings; the winners of the Under-25 NextGen Classic were automatically seeded 13th.

Fans in Calgary will get a chance to experience the all-new Original 16 Sky Deck at the PointsBet Invitational. The unique Original 16 Sky Deck environment not only offers a great view of the action, but a new fan experience with different themes and surroundings, and so much more. Space on the Original 16 Sky Deck will be limited, and it’ll be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All other tickets, including single-draw and full-event packages, are subject to standard ticket service fees.

Fans still have other ticket package options available, including:

  • Premium Full-Event Package ($245): A single ticket in premium centre ice or end zone section to every draw of the PointsBet Invitational. Ten draws total per package.
  • Standard Full-Event Package ($215): A single ticket all other sections to every draw of the PointsBet Invitational. Ten draws total per package.

All 32 competing teams will receive $5,000 to cover travel and accommodation costs, and teams will earn more money for each successive win in the single-knockout tournament — $3,000 for a first-round win, $6,000 for a quarterfinal win, $12,000 for a semifinal win and $24,000 to the victorious women’s and men’s teams, meaning the two winning teams will each collect a total of $50,000.
