The Thornhill Club was established in 1922 and celebrated its 100th season in 2022. Curling was established in 1963 at Thornhill and has a long and storied history with many provincial, national and world champions who have made Thornhill their home club over the years. The club currently has 325 curling members, making it one of the largest and most vibrant private club curling facilities in the country.
As one of the top-rated private facilities in the GTA, Thornhill offers an 18–hole Championship Golf Course, which hosted the 1945 Canadian Open, and a well-used Executive 9-hole golf course. Outside of golf and curling, Thornhill is a club for all seasons with fitness, tennis and our recently-built, resort-style pool — Members enjoy plenty of first-rate amenities on site.
The Thornhill Club seeks to fill the position of Head Ice Technician for the upcoming
2024-25 Curling Season and beyond.

Responsibilities:
• Oversees and maintains the curling rink facility in the areas of ice maintenance, housekeeping, operation and repair of mechanical equipment to ensure the continued and safe operation of the curling rink and associated equipment.
• Conducts annual start up activities, maintenance and ice making operations including but not limited to; servicing the refrigeration plant, line installation, setting in-ice advertisements/logos.
• Plans and implements an ice maintenance program.
• Monitors to ensure maintenance and ice making standards are maintained and adjustments are made.
• Performs ongoing ice making and maintenance duties. Maintains a quality ice surface and a safe curling rink environment for patrons. Includes, but not limited to, sweeping, nipping, and pebbling the surface; clean and maintain the areas around the ice surface (vacuum carpets, garbage pickup as needed); cleans, grooms and wet vacuums.
• Ice preparation in advance of all scheduled league play, bonspiels, rentals and OCA events. A full list of scheduled curling will be provided in advance.
• Maintain all ice-making equipment including, but not limited to,; responding to emergency alarms, changing filters, maintenance of all equipment in compressor room, headers, ice scrappers and nipper, heaters and dehumidifiers, etc.
• Develop and implement a yearly preventative maintenance program for the curling plant; including but not limited to the compressor, chiller and condenser
• Working knowledge and application of the “ice mistress” control system
• Responsible for implementing energy saving measures throughout the curling season using the “ice mistress” control system
• Initiates and completes the plant shutdown operations at the end of the curling season.
• Perform summer maintenance procedures and/or repairs as may be required.
• Maintain complete equipment and maintenance records including a daily logbook.
• Communicate frequently and regularly with the Sports and Activities Manager,
the Curling Manager and the Curling Executive Committee.
• Adheres to all policy and safety guidelines as outlined in policy and procedure manuals. Incorporate fire protection and safety procedures into daily routine.
The Head Ice Technician position comes with the opportunity for year-round employment assisting in our tennis and aquatics operations if agreeable between the club and the successful applicant.

Qualifications:
• Ice Technician Certification Level 2 or better;
• WHIMIS Certification;
• Basic Refrigeration Certification;
• Minimum 5 years ice experience as an ice technician;
• Experience in equipment inventory tracking and general repairs as asset;
• Experience operating all types of curling equipment – scraper, burner, etc.;
• Knowledge in the sport of Curling;
• Ability to meet deadlines, adapt to changing priorities and troubleshoot
equipment/ice conditions;
• Well-developed organizational and communication skills;
• Interpersonal skills and diplomacy/tact in dealing with members and staff;
• Good knowledge of ice maintenance costs and budgeting.
Compensation is commensurate based on relevant work experience, qualifications and
interpersonal skills.
