Summerside in spotlight!
Summerside to host 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles, Canadian Under-21 Championships
It will be a two-week celebration of championship curling in picturesque Summerside, Prince Edward Island, it was announced today by Curling Canada.
The 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship will run March 16-21, and will be immediately followed by the Canadian Under-21 Women’s and Men’s Championships, March 22-30.
The events will be played at the Gerard “Turk” Gallant Arena at Credit Union Place, and the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex.
“Summerside put together an outstanding bid,” said Nolan Thiessen, Chief Executive Officer of Curling Canada. “We were pleased that we could combine these events for the first time to give curling fans in Prince Edward Island a superb opportunity to watch our best current and up-and-coming players under one roof.”
It will be the first time the events have been combined in one city. The Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship had been jointly staged with the U SPORTS Canadian University and Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championships in recent seasons, including later this season in Fredericton, N.B. The Canadian Under-21 Championships has been a stand-alone event, including later this season in Fort McMurray, Alta.
“Our city is thrilled to host the 2025 Canadian Under-21 Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships and the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in March 2025,” said Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher. “Join us for a 14-day national curling spectacle, where Summerside proudly becomes the epicentre of Canadian curling excellence.”
It will be the first time the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship has been played in Prince Edward Island, and it will be the 11th edition. The winning team will advance to the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Championship (dates, location to be announced by World Curling).
The Canadian Under-21 Championships, meanwhile, have been played in P.E.I. on numerous occasions, most recently in 2002 at Summerside when the host-province star Suzanne Birt and her team claimed gold on the women’s side and Manitoba’s Team David Hamblin claimed the men’s gold.
Prior to 1987, the men’s and women’s events were run in separate cities. The 1958 and 1978 men’s events were in Charlottetown (won by Northern Ontario’s Team Tom Tod and Alberta’s Team Darren Fish respectively), while the 1980 women’s event was played in Charlottetown, with Team Kay Zinck of Nova Scotia capturing the gold.
Team Birt is the only former P.E.I.-based Canadian women’s Under-21 champion, while P.E.I. teams skipped by Bill Jenkins in 1976 at Kapuskasing, Ont., and Brett Gallant in 2009 at Salmon Arm, B.C., have won men’s national titles.
The winners of the 2025 Canadian Under-21 Championships will earn the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2026 World Junior Championships (dates, location to be announced by World Curling).
Summerside has also hosted numerous other national events, including the 1987 Canadian Mixed Championship, won by P.E.I.’s Team Peter Gallant, as well as the Canadian Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships in 2006 (won by Northern Ontario’s Team Al Hackner and Ontario’s Team Anne Dunn), 2009 (won by Ontario’s Team Bruce Delaney and Nova Scotia’s Team Colleen Pinkney) and 2013 (won by New Brunswick’s Team Wayne Tallon and, again, Team Pinkney of Nova Scotia).
As well, in 2017, Summerside played host to the Canadian Curling Pre-Trials.
“Summerside has a dedicated curling community that I know did a superb job in putting this bid together,” said Amy Duncan, Executive-Director of Curl P.E.I. “Athletes, coaches, families and fans are going to be in for a treat, and I have every confidence that these two weeks in 2025 will be memorable for everyone.”
