Four teams playoff-bound at Mixed

Alberta, Northern Ontario, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick are through to the playoffs at the 2016 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships at the Weston Golf and Country Club in Toronto. New Brunswick punched its ticket to the semifinals with a 7-4 win over Nova Scotia’s Doug MacKenzie in the final round robin game. New Brunswick’s Charlie Sullivan opened the scoring with a deuce in the first end followed by a single in the second end. MacKenzie answered back with three in the third. N.B. picked up a single in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. N.S. blanked the fifth end, then was forced to a single in the sixth. N.B. reclaimed the lead with a single in seven. Needing a deuce for the win, or at least a single to keep playoff hopes alive, MacKenzie came up just short, as New Brunswick stole its way to the win. Both teams finished off the round robin with 6-4 records and New Brunswick advances by virtue of its head-to-head record against Nova Scotia. Alberta went undefeated in the round robin with an unblemished 10-0 record after taking down Quebec’s Maxime Elmaleh 4-1. Quebec finished off at 5-5. Northern Ontario’s Colin Koivula, Oye-Sem Won Briand, Christopher Briand and Amanda Gates secured second place in the round robin with a 6-2 win over the Yukon’s Bob Smallwood. Yukon completed the round robin at 3-7. Despite an 8-6 loss to the Northwest Territories in the final game, Saskatchewan held on to third place in the round robin with a 6-4 finish. N.W.T. finished the tournament at 4-6. Manitoba’s Bob Sigurdson , Erika Sigurdson , Al Purdy and Lindsay Baldock concluded the round robin with a bang against Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chris Ford. It came down to an extra-end showdown where Manitoba picked up a single to secure the 5-4 victory. Manitoba finished with a 5-4 record while Newfoundland and Labrador finished 3-6. In the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m. ET, Alberta takes on New Brunswick and Northern Ontario faces off against Saskatchewan. The winners will advance to the finals at 4 p.m. ET.
