Alberta’s Deb Santos and Nova Scotia’s Colleen Pinkney share the lead, each with three consecutive wins to start the round robin of the 2013 Canadian Senior Women’s Curling Championship at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside, PEI. Santos’ St. Albert CC foursome used last stone advantage effectively in the opening end with a score of four points against previously undefeated Laura Phillips of Newfoundland & Labrador.  Santos was in cruise control the rest of the away, scoring with the hammer while allowing Phillips a single deuce and three single point ends the rest of the way. The final score was 9-5. Phillips drops to 2-1. Truro’s Colleen Pinkney also squared off against an unbeaten opponent facing Catherine Derick’s Québec team. Pinkney led 3-1 at the 5th end break on the strength of a score of two in the third end. Derick replied with single points in the 6th, 7th and 8th ends to lead by one playing the 9th. With multiple stones in play, Pinkney had a difficult draw for three, missing it, scoring only the two points. Derick had a difficult time getting anything going in the 10th, facing a wide draw to the corner of the four foot to tie the game. She was heavy, however, allowing the Pinkney the steal and the 6-4 win. Pinkney joins Santos at 3-0, while Derick drops to 2-1. In the final match of women’s play Sunday afternoon, reigning world senior champ Heidi Hanlon used the hammer to score three points in the 10th end to squeak by Ontario’s Judy Oryniak 8-7. Hanlon improves to 2-1 while the hard-luck Ontario team is winless after three games. In men’s play, the host province’s Rod MacDonald and Manitoba’s Bob Sigurdson moved up the leaderboard at 2-1 with victories over BC’s Craig Lepine 8-5 and Northern Ontario’s Bruce Munro 8-2 respectively. Lepine drops to 1-2 while Munro is still winless at 0-3.  Québec’s Robbie Maclean earned his first win dumping Saskatchewan’s Gord Bell 9-5. Both rinks are now 1-2. Play continues all week with the championship finals for both genders scheduled for Sunday, March 24 at 10:00 am EST. The winners will represent Canada at the 2014 World Seniors at a location yet to be announced.
